Why become a First Aider for Mental Health?

  • 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health condition.

  • At least 1 in 6 employees experience common mental health problems in the workplace and the biggest contributor to symptoms is stress.

  • Poor mental health accounts for more than half of all work-related illnesses with 51% of longterm sick leave being due to stress, depression or anxiety.

  • Mental health conditions are often hidden due to stigma and fear of discrimination. Mind UK suggest that only 50% of employees are likely to confide in their manager about their mental health difficulties.

  • A culture of fear and silence is costly to employers with an estimate of 18 million days (£51 billion) being lost in the UK due to mental health conditions.

Please note this qualification does not enable learners to diagnose or treat mental health conditions as this can only be carried out by healthcare professionals. However, it will provide knowledge of how to identify when a person may have a condition, and equip you to provide support and signpost your colleague to services that can help.
